Wind Energy Technology - Overview
By: Ryan Narendra
When you step outside what do you see? What do you feel? Would you believe that the wind you feel against your face can be used as a source of energy? It's quite true, all that need be done is to harness that wind energy, and use it to our advantage. It's a huge deal; after all,
wind energy technology is
a renewable resource.
Wind is something that is caused by uneven heating in the atmosphere. The earth determines how the wind flows, with its many contours and terrain variations, and if you think about it, man has been using
wind energy technology for hundreds of years.
Sailors and pirates alike on the high seas in ages past used the wind to guide their path long before the invention of fossil fuels. There was a time when the wind really was the main source of power, at least in movement.
Basically,
wind energy technology is generated by turbines. These turbines are turned by the wind, and as the blades turn, they rotate a shaft leading to a generator. This action generates electricity, therefore not relying on anything other than what Mother Nature has given us.
There are two types of wind energy technology turbines; they are the Vertical Axis Turbines and the Horizontal Axis Turbines. They both have some difference, and they both have different uses. Let's take a look at the difference between these two turbines.
The Vertical Axis Turbines are more uncommon, mainly because they are not quite as reliable as their counterparts. Basically, they have poor performance, but there are some applications for them, which are still being explored. The performance of these turbines is still being improved, and with any luck, they will have practical application very soon.
The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines are the most reliable in wind energy technology. Though there are many different designs for these, you can't help but think of the old-fashioned windmill when you look at them. These types of turbines are used all over the world, and are able to provide clean stable energy. There may even come a day when you see them all over the world.
Wind energy technology is much more common than you might think, and with every passing day, it becomes much more popular. People are trading in their traditional power systems for these clean, efficient systems all over the world. The initial cost might be a bit much, but just think of how much money you'll save in the long run? The only way these will cease to function, is if the wind ceases to blow. If that happens, we'll have more to worry about than efficient energy production.
