Solar power is a great energy source for anyone striving to both save money and to live greener lives. The sun's energy can either be used to supplement existing power systems, or in some situations can completely replace them. The concept behind solar energy is rather simple. The sun's rays in the form of photons strike photo voltaic panels which convert the energy into an electric current. The electricity can then be routed directly into circuits and used immediately, or can charge batteries for later use.

One great aspect of solar energy is that it is easy to use, and can be harnessed in ways both small and large. Backpack-mounted systems are great for recharging PDAs, cell phones and other small gadgets that run out of power all too frequently. Larger systems provide power to boats and other vehicles that may be off the grid for days but still need electricity for appliances. Even larger installations can supplement or replace municipal electricity supplies in homes or businesses. Solar power is scalable. It works well regardless of whether its use is small or massive. It is also a great partial solution, as it isn't necessary to receive all electricity from a single source.

There are many options for those seeking to harness solar energy for municipal power purposes. Many do-it-yourself kits currently exist, claiming easy and inexpensive installation procedures that anyone can perform. Larger, professional installations are also offered by companies specializing in the task of configuring homes for solar power use. Before investing in any system, it is wise to see if your city or electric company offers any rebates or incentive programs for converting your home partially or completely to solar power.

Solar power certainly isn't for everyone, and has its share of disadvantages. Chief among these is that it is ineffective in climates where sunlight isn't as readily available. While areas such as the south western United States are great candidates for solar power use, cloudier areas such as the Pacific Northwest may leave some users without solar power during the winter months, or receiving less than is ideal during the summer.

Solar power also has economic and technical disadvantages which, thankfully, are lessening as the state of the art advances. Individual solar panels are not incredibly efficient, and as such large arrays are usually needed. Also, since direct orientation toward sunlight is required for greatest efficiency, a mechanical system for moving panels is usually needed. Furthermore, since solar panels are almost constantly exposed to UV radiation and other environmental factors, they deteriorate fairly quickly and must be maintained.

Even so, solar panel technology is advancing rapidly, and what were huge technical issues only a few years ago are now nothing more than minor inconveniences. Whether your needs are providing a bit of juice to your gadgets while on the go, or slowly moving your home or business off the grid, solar energy is worth consideration. Not only is it among the cleanest power available, but it is one of the least impactful methods for generating enough electricity with which to live, work and play.
