Energy Efficiency Grants - What Is It?

By: Ryan Narendra

Generally speaking, there are two key aspects of alternative energy advancement and adoption. The first and most obvious is technological. Not only must alternative energy become price competitive with fossil fuels, but the right solution must be used in each specific situation. The second aspect is economic. Until it becomes economically efficient to go green , many companies will only do so out of necessity. There are many economic measures intended to encourage this change before it is necessity, of which energy efficiency grants are one example.

Energy efficiency is a relatively new concept in the industrialized world. For years, technology has been designed with little thought to energy use in mind, born out of the belief that there would always be abundant power available. Even when this was revealed as falsehood, energy inefficient design persisted as the existing momentum was not easily changed. Now, despite more energy efficient technologies in most aspects of our lives, much of that momentum still persists. While the desire to change may be present, the economic means to do so may be lacking.

Energy efficiency grants are one means of providing the economic means to change this momentum. They serve two broad purposes. Most obviously, energy efficiency grants help clean up the environment. By taking steps to improve the energy efficiency of your home or business, you will lessen the impact you have both by lowering your fossil fuel demand, as well as the burden placed on alternative energy sources if your area ever adopts them. Increasing energy efficiency boosts this likelihood by lowering the output needed from alternative sources in order to meet a location's demand.

Energy efficiency grants are also an indirect investment. By lessening a home or business's demands on the power grid, less money is needed to maintain it. By lessening the demand for power today, the likelihood and availability of alternative energy tomorrow is greater.

Energy efficiency grants are available for homes or businesses, and adopt many forms. Older buildings may be worthy of grant money to help update inefficient or unsafe wiring, insulation or heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems to take advantage of more recent energy-saving technologies. Newer buildings may be eligible for grants by supplementing electricity with solar power, or even for changing to more efficient light bulbs. Available grants and eligibility criteria vary based on location and circumstance.

If you're interested in pursuing energy efficiency grants, here are a few places to start. Local city councils or state governments are most affected by your use of power, and are most likely to offer grants. Your electric company may also offer incentives to use other forms of power, or options to lessen environmental impact by purchasing energy from alternative sources. For businesses, local chambers of commerce may also provide information about commercial grants or sources of money not available for residential use.
